Why Mat Still Matters
If you’ve ever thought, “Mat just isn’t for me” you’re not alone.
For many people, mat Pilates has a reputation for being either too basic or surprisingly hard. It can feel stripped back, exposed, even confusing, especially if your experience of Pilates has mostly been on the reformer or through contemporary choreography. But mat is where the method lives.
This March, our Experience Mat Workshop invites you to return to the foundations of Pilates. Not as a step backwards, but as a way to go deeper. Over five progressive weeks, we’ll explore what Pilates actually is: a system built on structure, intention and intelligence, not just a collection of exercises.
Pilates as a system, not just a workout
Pilates wasn’t designed to be rushed through or endlessly varied for novelty’s sake. At its core, it’s a method that rewards attention, repetition and curiosity.
In this workshop, we won’t move through exercises in isolation. Instead, we’ll take time to unpack key themes across the month, returning to foundational shapes, refining transitions, and deepening understanding. Each week builds on the last, giving your body and nervous system time to integrate what you’re learning.
We’ll ask questions like:
- Why do we move this way?
- Why does the breath matter?
- What is this exercise actually asking of the body?

Meredith’s approach
Meredith’s relationship with Pilates began during her dance training, where she experienced firsthand its ability to support strength, flexibility and longevity in the body. After completing her degree in dance and pursuing a career in contemporary dance and choreography, Pilates remained a constant. Not just as conditioning, but as a way to support overall health and wellbeing.
Her comprehensive training through Fletcher Pilates included over 1000 hours of study across the full system: mat and equipment, anatomy, rehabilitation, gait analysis, and pre/postnatal work. With over 20 years of teaching experience, Meredith has worked with everyone from teenagers to older adults, people recovering from injury to professional athletes.
What underpins her teaching is a belief in natural movement, using flow and breath to harmonise the whole body. She encourages curiosity over perfection, helping people build confidence in their bodies and trust in the process.
Rooted in the Fletcher Method
This series is taught by Meredith and grounded in the Fletcher Pilates Method — a classical lineage that places breath, rhythm and fluidity at the heart of the work.
Developed by Ron Fletcher, one of the earliest teachers to study directly with Joseph Pilates, the Fletcher approach honours the original mat repertoire while emphasising movement as a living, breathing practice. Breath isn’t an add-on, it’s what initiates and supports the movement, encouraging spinal mobility, core strength and full-body integration.
Rather than muscling through exercises, the work invites efficiency, clarity and flow. Students are challenged to observe how the movement feels in the body, and adapt accordingly, bringing an almost somatic element to the practice.

Who this workshop is for?
This series is accessible for those newer to mat and deeply enriching for more experienced practitioners. It’s especially suited to:
- Reformer lovers who want to challenge and hone technique
- Movers who enjoy structure, detail and progression
- Anyone curious about why Pilates works
Over five weeks, you’ll build alignment, stamina and strength using nothing but your mat. Leave each session feeling organised, energised and more connected to your body.
While the series is progressive, students are welcome to take just one or a few as their schedule allows.
