Stretch Therapy

Stretch Therapy is a powerful tool for improving flexibility, mobility, and overall body function. At Mo.Co. our Stretch Therapy sessions are designed to help you move more efficiently while providing deep relaxation. Using a personalised approach, our stretch therapists guide your body through targeted stretches tailored to your needs. Stretch Therapy is sometimes referred to as ‘assisted stretching’.

The purpose and importance of Stretch Therapy

Stretch Therapy goes beyond traditional stretching by incorporating assisted techniques that enhance range of motion, release tension, and improve circulation. It is especially beneficial for those looking to:

  • Increase flexibility and mobility
  • Enhance muscle recovery and athletic performance
  • Reduce stress and muscular tension
  • Improve posture and joint health
  • Alleviate chronic tightness and discomfort
  • Develop an understanding of asymmetries and patterns that may be contributing to chronic pain
  • Learn postural cues and stretching exercises to do at home

Stretch Therapy techniques

Our method combines various evidence-based techniques to achieve optimal results:

  • Active Release: A skill developed during Stretch Therapy where the client learns to release body weight consciously. This skill is carried into everyday life – for instance, learning to release the weight of the arms and shoulders to relax the neck while walking.
  • Passive Stretching: Therapist-assisted stretching is used to guide muscles gently into a deeper range of motion.
  • Active Stretching: Engaging muscles while lengthening and releasing their counterpart (agonist) to facilitate increased range of motion and function.
  • PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation): A contract-relax method to enhance muscle, especially helpful for areas that have atrophied or become chronically tight.
  • Myofascial Release: Gentle pressure is applied to the fascia to reduce stiffness and improve movement.
  • Pin and Stretch: Pressure to one area (typically an attachment site) to create more stability while stretching an adjacent area.

Incorporating assisted stretching into your routine

Consistency is key for lasting improvements in flexibility and mobility. Our flexible credit system allows you to integrate stretch therapy into your wellness routine at a pace that suits your lifestyle.

The Mo.Co. treatment room experience

Our dedicated stretch therapy space is designed for comfort and relaxation. In a calm, private setting, your stretch therapist will assess your needs and tailor the session to help you achieve greater ease of movement. Through active release, passive movement and breathwork, your nervous system is downregulated, allowing for deep relaxation while enhancing mobility.

Our Reviews

Frequently
Asked
Questions

How does Stretch Therapy work?

Stretch Therapy uses gentle traction, 3D (full joint range) stretching, and fluid movement to target the entire joint capsule—not just muscles and connective tissues. Unlike self-stretching, where you need to engage muscles to hold position, our therapists support your body weight and alignment so you can fully relax, allowing for a deeper, more effective stretch.

Who is Stretch Therapy for?

Everyone! Sessions are tailored to your age, activity level, and goals to ensure the perfect stretch for you. Even those dealing with hyper-mobility can benefit from stretches to target areas of restriction while receiving stabilising/strengthening techniques for overly mobile areas.

Why do I need Stretch Therapy?

As we age, fascia (connective tissue) stiffens, and joint capsules tighten. Regular stretching helps maintain mobility, flexibility, and ease of movement.

Can Stretch Therapy help with muscle recovery?

Yes! Stretch Therapy improves circulation, reduces muscle tightness, and promotes faster recovery by helping remove metabolic waste and increasing blood flow to tired muscles. It also helps prevent stiffness and soreness after workouts.

What are the benefits of Stretch Therapy?
  • Increased range of motion
  • Reduced pain and muscle tension
  • Faster recovery from injury
  • Improved posture and alignment
  • Enhanced sports performance
  • Calmer nervous system and stress relief
  • Greater body awareness and motivation to move

What qualifications do your teachers have?

Our stretch teachers come from diverse backgrounds, including Pilates, yoga, dance, personal training, and manual therapy. Each teacher is trained and qualified in The Stretch Experience method (a CPD accredited course), ensuring expert guidance tailored to your needs.

What is a Stretch Therapy session like?

Sessions vary based on your goals, but here’s a typical format:

  1. Assessment: We check posture and movement patterns to tailor the session.
  2. On the Table Stretch: You relax while we guide your body through dynamic, flowing stretches that cover the whole body with a focus on your specific needs. Expect ongoing communication to ensure a “yummy, not ouchy” intensity.
  3. Take-Home Stretch: You’ll learn a personalised stretch to maintain progress between sessions. (Optional, but highly recommended!)

What should I wear?

Dress as you would for yoga or a workout. Ensure you’re comfortably concealed for full freedom of movement. Bare feet or socks are welcome. If you tend to feel cold, opt for layers and cozy socks—we offer blankets and heated tables for extra comfort.

Do I need to warm up beforehand?

No! Our method builds intensity gradually, so your warm-up is built into the session. Hydration before and after is recommended.

Should I book my stretch before or after a workout?

Either works! Pre-workout stretches increase mobility and may improve performance. Post-workout stretches aid recovery, reduce soreness, and promote relaxation. Experiment to see what feels best for you.

How long are sessions?

We offer 50, 60, 75, and 90-minute sessions.

How early should I arrive?

If it’s your first session, arrive 10 minutes early in case you need help finding us. After that, arriving 5 minutes early is perfect.

Will it hurt?

No! We meet you where you are, ensuring gentle, effective stretching that avoids pain. Our approach prioritises comfort and progress over force. It’s well documented thorough multiple peer reviewed studies that painful stretching is damaging and softer stretching is both safe and highly effective.

Can I stretch if I’m injured?

Check with your doctor/physiotherapist first, especially after surgery or an injury. Once cleared, we’ll adapt the session to support your recovery. Often stretching the areas around an injury can help prevent compensatory patterns from developing while an injured area is weak/restricted.

Can I stretch while pregnant?

Yes! Stretch Therapy can help relieve common pregnancy aches. Sessions are gentle and adjusted for safety. Please get clearance from your doctor first and communicate with us before booking as some therapists are qualified for pre/post natal work, and others are not.

How often should I come?

This depends entirely on your goals. Some clients come 2-3 times per week to achieve a specific goal – others come a few times a year for a ‘tune up’. Generally speaking if you begin with a session/week for 4-8 weeks you’ll see a big jump in progress, from there, taper your sessions to a maintenance rhythm that works for you. Once or twice a month is great!

We’ll help find the right rhythm for you… because you guessed it! We’re flexible 😉
